Suku Bajau
00.30 Edit This 21 Comments » Suku Bajau atau yang lebih dikenal dengan sebutan sehari-hari suku Bajo, adalah suku bangsa yang tanah asalnya Kepulauan Sulu, Filipina Selatan. Suku ini merupakan suku nomaden yang hidup di atas laut, sehingga disebut gipsi laut. Suku Bajau menggunakan bahasa Sama-Bajau. Suku Bajau sejak ratusan tahun yang lalu sudah menyebar ke negeri Sabah dan berbagai wilayah Indonesia. Suku Bajau juga merupakan anak negeri di Sabah. Suku Bajau menempati pesisir Kalimantan Timur, lebih dahulu daripada kedatangan suku Bugis.
Wilayah yang terdapat suku Bajau, antara lain :
1. Kalimantan Timur (Berau, Bontang, dan lain-lain)
2. Kalimantan Selatan (Kota Baru)
3. Sulawesi Selatan (Selayar)
4. Sulawesi Tenggara
5. Nusa Tenggara Barat
6. Nusa Tenggara Timur (pulau Komodo)
7. Dan lain-lain
Suku ini merupakan kelompok masyarakat yang memiliki mobilitas tinggi, yang kehidupan umum-nya berlangsung di laut. Bahkan mereka lahir-pun di laut. Suku Bajau juga termasuk kelompok etnis yang masih berada dalam kondisi ekonomi, sosial dan budaya yang belum berkembang. Di antara mereka ada yang masih hidup secara primitif dan bertempat tinggal di atas perahu kecil bersama istri, anak-anak serta anggota keluarga lainnya. Namun tidak semua orang Bajau hidup seperti itu.
Orang Bajau percaya bahwa laut itu berpenghuni, di sana ada semua ciptaan Tuhan, sehingga orang Bajau selalu berhati-hati kalau turun ke laut. Mereka juga menempatkan unsur api, angin, tanah, dan air sebagai nilai sakral tinggi. Keempat unsur ini merupakan cerminan empat unsur penting lainnya, yaitu tubuh, hati, nyawa, dan manusia.
Suku ini juga dikenal sebagai pelaut ulung yang hidup mati-nya di laut, dan mampu menyelam di laut dalam jangka waktu lama tanpa alat bantu sama sekali.
Salah satu suku Melayu di provinsi Jambi, yaitu suku Melayu Bajau yang berada di pinggir panlai Kuala Tungkal Kabupalcn Jabung Barat, saat ini cenderung agak menepi sehingga terbelakng dari masyarakat sekitarnya. Hidup di kampung nelayan yang berlokasi di pinggir pantai laut yang berawa-rawa. Suku Mdayu Bajau tumbuh pada umumnya bergantung pada kekayaan laut.
Dari pengamatan sementara, suku Melayu Bajau kurang survival, buik dari sudut ekonomi, budaya, dan pendidikan. Suku ini hidup dalam bentuk sederhana di di rumah-rumah diatas air dan jarang sekali mereka dijumpai dalam bentuk usaha lain, seperti petani, pedagang, dan pegawai. Meskipun suku ini tidak lama dibina oleh berbagai instansi terkait, namun tampaknya larnbat terjadi proses kedinamisan pada suku ini. Apakah dalam hal ini diasumsikan bahwa suku Melayu Bajau Kuala Tungkal, dalam sistem nilai budaya cenderung konservatif sehingga mereka tidak mampu ‘survival’ dengan suku pendatang.
